Stephen Graham Jones

Born in Midland, Texas, Stephen Graham Jones had a checkered high school career and never actually intended to go to college, it just sort of happened. His debut novel, The Fast Red Road began as a dissertation while he was attending Florida State University and was subsequently published in 2000 when he was 28. I find his acknowledgements to be almost as entertaining as his fiction.

The Only Good Indians was the first book of his that I read, and while I enormously enjoyed it, It was more recently when I read My Heart is a Chainsaw that I decided to doff my hat. More often than not, it's plot and storyline that I enjoy most about the books I read. However his character, Jennifer "Jade" Daniels is one of the most compelling and relatable I've ever encountered! Everything from her attitude toward authority in school to her low-class upbringing and refuge in slasher films she has Jeopardy-worthy knowledge about reminded me so much of myself when I was seventeen. I too was the horror aficionado that nobody understood and I literally cheer for Jade. The closing lines of Chainsaw's sequel, Don't fear the Reaper  says it all. No spoilers, but I couldn't stop grinning after I read it! I can't wait to read the last in the trilogy and will eagerly seek more of his work. Thank you Mr. Jones for showing me not only that I'm not alone, but that it's also A-OK!

Stephen Graham Jones currently resides in Boulder, Colorado with his wife Nancy, their children and "too many trucks."
